Reduced risk of collapse in complex buildings

(24-10-2022) In his doctorate, Minh Hoang Le investigated how to detect damage to complex buildings more quickly.

Both natural and man-made hazards can cause structural damage or even building collapse. Consider earthquakes, storms, harsh weather conditions, overloading or unintentional loading, and so on. An unexpected collapse can be disastrous, not only in terms of human lives and financial losses, but also in terms of social consequences.

Therefore, detection of structural damage is critical, especially in the early stages of degradation, to minimize abrupt failures and increase the safety and reliability of the structure.

To date, almost all investigations have focused on buildings with simple structures. Complex structures have been studied much less until now.

"The goal of my research is to address the shortcomings of traditional methods and develop new techniques for damage identification in complex structures," Minh says.

"Specifically, I developed a program that couples commercial SAP2000 software with the MATLAB program. This program allows users to create a continuous two-way data exchange between SAP2000 and MATLAB," Minh explains.

Minh Hoang Le graduated from Ho Chi Minh City University of Architecture with a bachelor's degree and from Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology with a master's degree. He is currently a lecturer at Ho Chi Minh City Open University, Vietnam. Simulation, optimization algorithms, structural damage detection, and machine learning are his research interests. He published three publications in major journals in the fields of optimization algorithms and structural damage detection. He has successfully developed two new metaheuristic optimization algorithms. Both of these algorithms are potential and promising algorithms for solving optimization problems in different fields.
