African Languages and Cultures

If you are not taking the Africa semester in your third year of the standard learning track (BA3) and therefore follow both the second (BA2) and third (BA3) year of the standard learning track at Ghent University, then you should take a minor of 30 ECTS credits (spread as 15 ECTS credits in BA2 and 15 ECTS credits in BA3).

You look in the study guide at the study programme of Bachelor of Arts in African Languages and Cultures, and click on ‘Elective Courses’ and ‘Study Abroad Program: Africa’. There you will see an overview of the seven minors within your study programme. You choose one minor from this list.
it is not allowed to take a minor other than these seven within your study programme.

If you are taking the Africa semester in your third year of the standard learning track (BA3), you will also take one of the seven minors offered, but the scope of this minor will be somewhat more limited. In the second year (BA2), you will take 15 ECTS credits, just like the other students. In BA3, you have the choice to fill up 10 ECTS credits in the second semester with minors or electives (see list of choices under ‘Study Program: Ghent University’).

Minor in Arabic and Islamic Studies

Within the minor in Arabic and Islamic Studies, there are two mandatory course units with the * reference, namely ‘Introduction to Arabic Language Acquisition: Modern Standard Arabic and Egyptian Colloquial I’ (10 ECTS credits) and ‘Introduction to Arabic Language Acquisition: Modern Standard Arabic and Egyptian Colloquial II’ (10 ECTS credits). You need to take these two in the first year of your chosen minor. With this, you have already taken 20 ECTS credits of minor course units. In the second year of your chosen minor, you take 10 ECTS credits and have the choice between language and culture course units.

Minor in Archaeology

In the first year of your chosen minor, you take three mandatory course units from this minor with * reference, namely 'General Introduction to Archaeology', 'Introduction to World Archaeology' and 'Introduction to the Natural Sciences in Archaeology'. In doing so, you have already taken the first 16 ECTS credits of your minor. In the second year of your chosen minor, you take the fourth mandatory course unit with * reference, namely 'Introduction to Prospection and Excavation Techniques'. In this year, you complete the minor with other course units of your choice.

Minor in Economics and Business Management

In the first year of your chosen minor, you take one mandatory course unit from this minor with * reference, namely the basic course unit 'Economics'. In addition, you complete the minor with course units of your choice. Make sure to take into account the starting competencies described in the course sheet.

The faculty Economics and Business Administration offers various preparatory programmes which are accessible for academic bachelor's programmes. Several course units in the preparatory programmes for various master's programmes in Economics are included in the minor in Economics and Business Management. If you would like to obtain a master's degree in Economics later on, you should therefore carefully check which course units are concerned. In this way you can try to shorten the study duration.

Minor in Globalisation and Diversity Studies

Within this minor you are free to decide which course units to take. Certain course units cannot be taken if you do not have the necessary starting competencies. You should therefore carefully check the starting competencies of the individual course units. Moreover, some course units are only offered every two years. These course units are marked light grey in the study guide in the academic year in which they are not taught.
This minor is a good basis for the subsequent master's programme Gender and Diversity.

Minor in Literature

If you choose the minor in Literature, then you have to include the course unit with * reference, Theory of Literature, in your choice of minor. You are also free to supplement your minor with other course units from the minor in Literature or other literary course units offered by the faculty of Arts and Philosophy. A list of examples (.pdf, in Dutch) of literary course units.

Minor in Political and Social Sciences

This minor is made up of several course units belonging to the Bachelor of Science in Political Science. Two course units with * reference are mandatory, namely 'Introduction to Political Sciences' and 'Sociology'. In addition, you are free to choose which course units you would like to take from this minor.
Within the faculty of Political and Social Sciences, there are various preparatory programmes for master's programmes possible for academically-oriented bachelor programmes. Therefore, it may be interesting to choose the course units in function of a possible additional master's degree. It is best to inquire at the faculty of Political and Social Sciences.

Minor in Education

The Master of Science in Teaching started in academic year 2019-2020. It replaces the teacher training programme and is followed by students who want to become teachers. The decree for reinforcement of the teacher training programme stipulates that 15 ECTS credits of the teaching component of the Master of Science in Teaching can be offered as an elective package in the preceding bachelor's programme. Students who have followed this package in the bachelor can go straight to the Master of Science in Teaching. If you have not followed this package, you can still go on to the Master of Science in Teaching but you will have to make up the 15 ECTS credits (in the master's programme itself or via a separate preparatory programme).

Within this minor you have no choice but to take the three mandatory course units (15 ECTS credits): ‘Powerful Learning Environments’, ‘Teaching Methodology: Cultural Sciences’ and ‘Reference Internship: Cultural Sciences’. If you are not going on an exchange and therefore have to take 30 ECTS credits in total, you need to select the remaining 15 ECTS credits from another minor.
