Dr. Wouter Lips

Wouter Lips

I am a former post-doctoral assistant at GIES. I research international coordination against tax evasion and tax avoidance, offshore systems and the role of economic power in tax governance. During my Ph.D (2015-2019, funded by the Flanders Research Foundation), I looked into the OECD/G20 agenda on automatic exchange of banking information and multinationals’ tax avoidance. My work has been published in peer-reviewed journals (Journal of European Integration, New Political Economy, Globalizations), edited volumes and working papers series (UNU-CRIS), and has been presented at international conferences. Lately, I also developed an interest in web scraping and quantitative text analysis techniques.

I was involved as a lecturer in the bachelor political sciences at Ghent University, where I taught the course “Current Political Problems", and as a guest lecturer in the bachelor social sciences at VUB and master political sciences at Ghent University. I have also written op-eds and given comments in several national news media on tax events, and was part of a study for Open Data for Tax Justice, which has been referenced by The Guardian and The Financial Times.
